Formed at the Shanghai Conservatory in 1983, this versatile ensemble took second place at the prestigious London International Competition just two years later and began performing on the most prominent concert stages in Europe, North and South America, and Asia, earning glowing reviews for passionate musicality and impressive technique. Melding the delicacy of Eastern music with the emotional breadth of Western repertoire, they elegantly traverse genres, moving easily from traditional Chinese folk music to cutting-edge contemporary classical works. To celebrate its 25th anniversary, for the UCSC Arts & Lectures audience, the Quartet will perform String Quartet, Op. 11, by Samuel Barber (1910-1981); selections from Chinasong, arranged by Yi-We Jiang (b. 1963); and the String Quartet in C Major, Op. 59, No. 3, by Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827).
