New Music Works 30th AnniversaryFriday, January 23, 2009 at 7:30 pmUCSC Recital Hall
Join Santa Cruz’s own New Music Works (NMW) for an evening of fabulous performance and insightful commentary by composers and musicians. This imaginative and diverse program—a celebration of NMW’s 30th anniversary—includes a New Zealander’s adaptations of the Blues; a German-American’s Middle Eastern rendezvous with an oud; a Canadian’s marriage of a Chinese zither and a harpsichord; and an Argentinean’s lyric conjuring of Gypsies. Formed in 1979 by five composers intent on performing each other’s work, NMW is now dedicated to bringing music by living composers (especially those from the Santa Cruz area), original music/theater works, and masterworks of the 20th and 21st centuries to the stage.
